So many things are not perfect.
Okay, nothing, NOTHING is perfect. No thing. I think I’ve been pretty overwhelmed by this. Maybe even angry. I have seen the cracks in my previous and early beliefs about who God is, how this life should work, and what I was getting myself into. I chose and still choose God. Now, I know - life is just… hard sometimes. It’s hard living and looking, expecting someday for life to click into perfection.
“You are perfect in all of Your ways - to us.” The song seems to come up at so many of my weakest moments. And apparently I have a lot of weak moments because it is always playing somewhere. Today it struck me.
“YOU are PERFECT in all of YOUR ways TO us.”
It happens often. I hear a huge thud in my kitchen, to discover a bird, in full flight was going about her happy free flying life when… BOOM! She flew into the bay window! With all of her soul, she was swooping into what she thought was an inviting place. But the unexpected brought her to a sudden, jarring stop. Sadly, her blurry print is left on my window. Hopefully she got away before the dog discovered her.
This morning as I walked in from taking the children to school, her print caught my eye. I relate. I’ve run into a few windows in my life. I’ve been a mother, a friend, a wife, a daughter to the “window slam.” It never feels like you were ready. Every time, it just hurts.
These bubbling thoughts begin to stir. “Things should not be this way!” “What did I do wrong?” “How could I have prevented this?” All these things are typical, human-being responses. The clincher is, they are all about me. Every one of these statements focuses on me maintaining perfection, what I deserve, performing well enough to never have to suffer, etc. Yuck! All about me.
The truth is more simple than we want it to be. This is life. Things happen. Broken arms from playing dodge ball just happen. I do not want to minimize traumas. I am not saying we sit back and accept all things as a mere window slam. There are unspeakable things that happen in life that cannot be explained and we fight for God’s hand to move and change circumstances in His favor. I believe in the Miraculous! But I am saying, that sometimes, it’s just that living life is messy. If it were not so messy or risky and if everything were perfect, if we were perfect, we would have no need for the One Perfect.
HE IS PERFECTION. HE IS PERFECT TO US.
God Himself, wants to be perfect TO us. He has the perfect solution, the perfect medicine, the perfect rehabilitation for the “window slam.” We can look for Him in every moment. We invite Him to be near in the pain. He exists and occurs all around us (definition of Presence). We ask Him, to bring all of His perfection to all of our need.
Holy Spirit has perfection for you. I don’t know what it is, but I do know He is more than enough. He is perfect in all of His ways to us. He will overshoot your highest concern. He will go so sweetly low and bring healing to your deep. His perfection settles your soul, aligns your aim and heals your wings to fly again.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:8-10
